Market Preparation: Getting Ready for the Lilac Festival

The Lilac Festival in Calgary is one of the biggest outdoor festivals in the city, attracting around 90,000 to 100,000 people each summer. With only 10 days left until the festival, I am excited but also feeling the pressure to prepare for this major event. In my last Market Vlog, I mentioned that I almost sold out of everything, so I have been busy in the past few days trying to restock and get everything ready.

One of the first things I did was order a big shipment of yarn. I restocked on my favorite snuggles light yarn, as well as placed an order for the perfect chunky yarn from Premiere. Unfortunately, the delivery got delayed, but I'm hoping it arrives soon. In the meantime, I have been organizing my craft room, which is currently a total disaster. I know it won't stay like this for long, as I'll need to focus on completing all my market preparations before I can tidy up.

Last year at the Lilac Festival, my Highland Cow creations were a massive hit. I sold out of them within the first hour. So this year, I am going "cow crazy" and stocking up on even more of these adorable creatures. I've already made a couple of Katie Did style cows, as well as a unicorn variation. Although I have to admit, I'm not completely satisfied with how the cow turned out in this style, so I don't think I'll be making more of them. However, the unicorn design is a definite winner.

To add more variety to my offerings, I decided to create new crochet animals. I made three new dinosaurs, including a light blue, pink and green, and green and coral one. In addition, since the little girly crab I previously made wasn't selling well, I decided to make her some crab friends. Now I have an orange, blue, and speckled crab to accompany her in a basket display.

Expanding my collection further, I crafted three more octopuses, one jellyfish, and several frogs. The frogs were incredibly popular at my last market, so I decided to make more of them. Currently, I have wingless beads, but I plan to adorn them with wings to make them even more appealing.

As the market date is approaching, I have been running various errands to ensure I have everything I need. One morning, I stopped at Michael's to pick up some vinyl for the fellow Thai orders I received from my website. While there, I also stumbled upon some glitter neon vinyl, which I instantly fell in love with. I'm excited to use it for my unicorn creations.

With only two days left until the Lilac Festival, I am finalizing all my preparations. I have been assembling crochet kits, restocking on yarn, and fulfilling the final few orders. It has been a hectic and busy week, but I'm proud of what I have accomplished. My booth is now filled with adorable crochet animals, including tiny elephants, unicorns, butterflies, octopuses, and many more.

I'm thrilled for the festival and excited to see how this year's market unfolds. It's always a thrilling experience to showcase my creations to the large crowds and connect with fellow craft enthusiasts. Despite the early morning start and long day ahead, I know it will be worth it.
