Starting the Crocheting Journey
How long have you been crocheting?
I started crocheting around 2009, or maybe late 2008, just a year or a year and a half after I got married. It was during a time when I was having trouble finding work, so I decided to use my spare time to learn a useful skill. I also wanted to be able to make things for my children in the future. So, around 2008 or 2009, I picked up my first crochet hook and began this creative journey.
How did you learn or who taught you how to crochet?
Since I didn't know anyone personally who crocheted, I turned to YouTube for guidance. I started watching crochet tutorial videos and initially learned to knit before venturing into the world of crochet. Once I grasped the basics of knitting, I found crochet to be much easier and more enjoyable. Beth in Texas was a YouTuber whose videos I found particularly helpful. Her easy-to-follow tutorials allowed me to progress quickly, and the first item I successfully crocheted was a granny ripple blanket, thanks to her guidance.
Sharing the Craft on Video
Why did you start making videos?
While I was searching for instructional videos on knitting and crochet, I noticed that many creators were also sharing their crafting projects and experiences. This sparked an idea in me: since I didn't have anyone around me who shared the same interest or passion for crafting, I decided to share my work on video. The online crochet community seemed like a welcoming place, and I wanted to connect with fellow crafters and showcase my creations.
What was your first video about?
My first video was a "What's in my knitting bag" tag. At that time, it was a popular type of video where crafters would share the contents of their crafting bags. It was a fun and light-hearted way to introduce myself to the online crafting community. I enjoyed the process so much that I continued creating videos in a similar style, sharing my works-in-progress and completed projects.
Favorite Types of Crochet Projects
What is your favorite type of project to make?
I have discovered that I thoroughly enjoy making large, flat items. While I appreciate the beauty of intricate patterns and complex designs, I personally find more satisfaction in creating blankets, scarves, and dishcloths. The simplicity of these projects allows for relaxation and mindfulness while crocheting. Though I occasionally dabble in smaller projects like hats, I find the process of making larger flat items to be the most enjoyable.
Crafty Family Connections
Do members of your family crochet or do other similar crafts?
Surprisingly, I am the only member of my immediate family who engages in any form of crafting. Although my mother once mentioned she used to knit, I never witnessed her knitting or had any knitting supplies in our house during my upbringing. It seems like a distant memory for her. My niece learned to knit briefly during elementary school, taught by one of her teachers. However, she didn't pursue it further, and I haven't seen her knit in a long time. As for my husband's family, his grandmother was skilled in various crafts but has since passed away. On my husband's side, his brother's wife has dabbled in knitting, but she may not be as passionate about it as I am with my crochet work.
Work in Progress and Future Updates
I have some exciting work in progress that I can't wait to share in my next video. However, I will wait until I have woven in all the loose ends and completed some remaining tasks. Currently, my cat has taken a liking to laying on my project, making it difficult to show the finished item in all its glory. Once I finalize these details, I will film the next video and give you a detailed update on my progress. Stay tuned!
Conclusion
In this video, I shared my crochet journey, beginning in 2009 and how I learned the craft through YouTube tutorials. I also discussed my motivation for starting a YouTube channel, the type of projects I enjoy making, and the lack of crafty connections within my immediate family. I look forward to showcasing my work-in-progress in a future video and updating you on my creative endeavors. Until then, happy crafting!
