Crochet Tutorial: Making a Christmas Tree Hat

Welcome back to the second video tutorial in the series where we will be working on my pattern, the Christmas tree hat. In the first video, I introduced the materials needed for this pattern and explained the color choices. If you haven't watched the first video, please check the playlist to get caught up.

Before we dive into the tutorial, let's recap the materials you'll need. The main yarn used is Escapist Color Crafter, with specific colors such as brown (Harlem), green (Utrecht), and lighter green (Veronica). You'll also need a 4mm crochet hook and stitch markers to help with stitch placement.

Now that we have everything ready, let's get started with the crocodile stitch. If you need a refresher on the crocodile stitch without any decreases, please refer to the previous video tutorial in the series.

To begin the first decrease, it's important to choose the placement carefully. By distributing the decreases evenly, you can avoid the hat leaning to one side. Mark the desired decrease location with a stitch marker. Keep in mind that you'll need four spaces (two Vs and two scales) to perform a decrease.

Now let's start crocheting the first decrease. Begin by chaining one and working two double crochets in the marked stitch, just as we did in the previous video. Continue with two double crochets in each V and one in each scale. Remember to avoid crocheting a decrease where there is a crocodile stitch in the previous row.

Once you've reached the marker, remove it, and chain two. Crochet one double crochet and one single crochet in the marked V, and then move on to the next scale, crocheting one double crochet in it as well. This completes the first part of the decrease. Chain two and repeat the process by crocheting two double crochets in the next V and one double crochet in the next scale. This creates a decrease.

After completing the decrease round, continue crocheting as usual until you reach the end of the round. Remember to finish the round with a slip stitch, chain two, and slip stitch into the first double crochet made.

Now let's move on to working on the decreased stitches. Crochet normally until you reach the decreased stitches, which will be slightly crumpled due to the skipped spaces. Yarn over and crochet five double crochets around the post of the decreased stitch. Omit the chain one between these stitches to cover the larger space.

In the next row, you'll tighten these stitches a bit by crocheting two double crochets in each space, which will provide stability and bring the stitches closer together. This will result in a bigger leaf that covers both spaces.

Continue working on the pattern, following the regular crocodile stitch build-up without any decreases. If you have any questions or need assistance while working on the pattern, feel free to leave a comment or contact me through Ravelry.

Once you've finished crocheting the hat, you can add your desired decorations to make it festive. Don't worry if some of the decreased stitches are visible. You can easily cover them up with additional decorations.

In case you encounter any issues during the process, refer to the troubleshooting tips section for some helpful solutions.

To conclude, I hope you found this tutorial helpful in creating your own Christmas tree hat. Enjoy the process and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Happy crocheting!
