How to Crochet a Sunflower-Inspired Backpack
Crocheting your own backpack can be a fun and rewarding project, allowing you to customize the design and colors to your liking. In this tutorial, I will guide you through the process of crocheting a sunflower-inspired backpack using granny squares. With some basic crochet skills and a few supplies, you'll have a unique and stylish backpack in no time.
1. Introduction
Crocheting a backpack may seem like a daunting task, but with the right guidance, it can be an enjoyable project for crochet enthusiasts of all skill levels. In this tutorial, I will walk you through the process step by step, providing detailed instructions and helpful tips along the way. By the end, you'll have a beautiful sunflower-inspired backpack that showcases your crochet skills.
2. Materials Needed
Before we get started, let's gather all the materials you'll need for this project:
- Yarn: Loops and Threads Chocolate Brown, Sapphire, Red Heart Pale Yellow, and Bright Yellow
- Crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Fabric for the backpack liner
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Button
Make sure you have all these supplies ready before diving into the crocheting process.
3. Making the Granny Squares
The foundation of our backpack will be granny squares. We will create two sizes of granny squares: larger ones for the body of the backpack and smaller ones for the sides.
Making the Bigger Granny Squares
To begin, create ten granny squares that are approximately six inches long and wide. The bigger square will consist of two rows of dark brown, one row of dark yellow, one row of light yellow, and two rows of dark blue. Refer to my other videos for instructions on making granny squares if needed.
Making the Smaller Granny Squares
Next, make nine smaller granny squares that are about four inches long and four inches wide. The smaller square will consist of one row of dark brown, one row of dark yellow, one row of light yellow, and one row of dark blue. Again, refer to my other videos if you need guidance on making granny squares.
Sewing the Granny Squares Together
Once you have all the granny squares ready, it's time to sew them together to form the body of the backpack. Start by sewing four larger squares together to create a section. Repeat this process to create another section. Sew two sections together to form the main body of the backpack. For the smaller squares, sew three squares together to form a row.
4. Assembling the Backpack
Now that we have our sections of granny squares, let's assemble the backpack.
Sewing the Corners of the Granny Squares Together
Align the smaller granny squares with the corners of the larger granny squares and sew along the edges. Repeat this step for the bottom and side corners to join the squares together. When finished, you should have the body of the backpack.
Sewing the Sides of the Granny Squares Together
Fold the backpack in half, making sure the right sides are facing each other. Sew along the sides, leaving the top open. This will create the shape of the backpack.
5. Adding the Liner
To give a finishing touch to the inside of the backpack and prevent small items from falling out, let's add a fabric liner.
Choosing a Fabric
Choose a fabric that complements the colors of your crochet work. Cut two pieces of fabric measuring 18 by 21 inches from your chosen fabric.
Sewing the Fabric to the Inside of the Backpack
Place the fabric inside the backpack, ensuring that the pretty side of the fabric is facing inward. Align the corners of the fabric with the middle of the corresponding granny squares. Hand-stitch the fabric to the inside of the backpack, securing it in place.
6. Adding the Backpack Flap
To create a flap for the backpack, we'll attach additional granny squares to the back of the backpack.
Sewing the Flap to the Back of the Backpack
Take the smaller granny squares and sew two of them to the top corners of the back side of the backpack. This will form the flap that will fold over and button in the middle.
7. Adding the Button and Loop
Attach a button to the front of the backpack, aligning it with the granny squares used for the flap. Create a loop with yarn and attach it to the top of the backpack, in between the two granny squares used for the flap. This loop will secure the button when the backpack is closed.
8. Making the Straps and Loop Holder
Craft two backpack straps using the colors of your choice. Sew the top of each strap to the thicker part of the corresponding granny square. Create a loop holder by folding yarn in half and sewing it to the middle of two granny squares, aligning it with the flap.
9. Finishing Touches
To add a decorative touch, crochet around the entire backpack using double crochet stitches. This will give a neat finish to the edges and enhance the overall appearance.
10. Conclusion
Congratulations! You have successfully crocheted a sunflower-inspired backpack from granny squares. This unique and stylish accessory showcases your crochet skills and creativity. Use it as a functional backpack or a statement piece to complete your outfits. Enjoy the process of crocheting and creating beautiful items that reflect your personal style.
