Introduction

Welcome back to my channel! In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to make a crochet circle cross-body bag using the waistcoat stitch. This is the final project in our holiday series, where I've been sharing quick and easy crochet projects that you can make as gifts for your loved ones. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the previous tutorials in this series for more project ideas.

Materials needed

Before we get started, let's gather all the materials we'll need for this project. You will need:

  • 5mm braided cotton cord
  • 6.5mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Tape measure
  • 3 4-inch lock swivel lobster clasps
  • 2 3/4-inch D-rings
  • Metal chain or strap of your choice

Make sure to have these materials ready before we begin!

Making a magic circle

To start our bag, we will first make a magic circle. Take your cord and form a loop, then insert your hook through the center of the loop. Next, chain one to secure the loop. This chain will count as the first stitch of each round.

Round 1: Single crochet stitches

In this round, we will be placing five single crochet stitches into the magic circle. Insert your hook into the circle, yarn over, and draw up a loop. Then, yarn over again and pull through both loops on your hook. Repeat this process four more times until you have a total of five single crochet stitches in the circle.

Round 2: Increase stitches

For this round, we will be increasing in every stitch around. Begin by making a waistcoat stitch in the first stitch, using the chain from the previous round as your first stitch. Then, continue to work your increases until you reach the end of the round. Make sure to crochet into the centers of the stitches, not underneath the lip. If you notice that the center starts to open, you can use the tail to pull it closed. Join the round with an invisible join.

Rounds 3-8: Continuing the increase

Continue to increase in every stitch for the next six rounds. Each round should have an invisible join to close it. By the end of round 8, you should have a total of eight rounds of increases. Keep following the instructions provided to ensure you're on the right track.

Creating the sides of the bag

To create the sides of the bag, we will start on round 9. Use a special version of the invisible closure to create a lip that blends in with the other side of the bag. Work in the back loop only and single crochet into the next seven stitches. Once you reach stitch seven, join it to the other side of the bag as we did previously with the D-ring attachment.

Attaching the D-ring

Take your bag and insert the loop through the D-ring. Use your hook to thread it through, and continue crocheting. Repeat this process for round 10 and work your way around the bag. This will ensure that the D-rings are securely attached to the bag.

Joining the sides of the bag

Now that the D-rings are attached, it's time to work down the sides of the bag to join them together. Use a slip stitch to do this, making sure to insert the hook through both sides of the stitches. Take a piece of cord and attach it to one end, then slip stitch your way around. This will create a clean and secure seam. Once you've completed the slip stitches, weave in the ends to finish off the bag.

Creating the strap and closure

In part two of this tutorial, I will show you how to create the strap and closure for the bag. This will involve using a metal chain or strap of your choice and attaching it to the bag. Follow the link in the description box below to watch part two and complete your cross-body bag.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have successfully completed your crochet circle cross-body bag using the waistcoat stitch. This stylish and functional bag is perfect for carrying your essentials while adding a touch of handmade charm to your outfit. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and found it helpful.
