Introduction

Welcome to this tutorial on creating a flat circular base using the single crochet stitch. In this pattern, we will be working row by row to achieve the desired shape. If you prefer a continuous circle pattern or a spiral, I have provided links in the description for those tutorials.

Materials Needed

To follow along with this project, you will need the following materials:

  • Size 4 medium weight acrylic yarn (such as the Big Twist Value brand)
  • Size G or 6/4.25mm crochet hook

Feel free to use any combination of crochet hook and yarn for this project.

Creating the Magic Circle

To begin, we will create a magic circle. Take your yarn tail and drape it over your working yarn, then insert your crochet hook into the loop. Yarn over and draw through the loop to secure the magic circle. Chain one to complete the magic circle.

Row 1: Single Crochets

Insert your crochet hook back into the magic circle, making sure to work over your tail as well. Place six single crochets inside the magic circle by yarn over and drawing up through the circle, then yarn over and drop two loops. Repeat this process five more times until you have a total of six single crochets.

Pull on the tail to tighten the circle and choose whether to work over the tail or not.

Row 2: Increasing Stitches

If you have chosen to work over the tail, skip the tiny chain and dive right into the first single crochet for a slip stitch. Drop the tail next to your stitch, yarn over, and pull through the stitch for a slip stitch. Chain one, then place two single crochets in the same stitch where you made the slip stitch.

Continue placing two single crochets in each stitch around the row. At the end of this row, you should have a total of twelve single crochets. Skip the slip stitch and the first chain, and slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet to complete the row.

Row 3: Continuing to Increase Stitches

Chain one, then place one single crochet in the same stitch where you made the slip stitch. This will be the first stitch of the row. Continue placing one single crochet in the next two stitches, then place two single crochets in the third stitch. Repeat this pattern around the row.

At the end of this row, you should have a total of eighteen single crochets. Skip the slip stitch and the first chain, and slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet to complete the row.

Repeatable Pattern for Increasing Stitches

From this point, the pattern becomes somewhat repeatable. For each row, subtract the row number by one to determine the stitch where you will place two single crochets. For example, on the fifth row, you will chain one and place one single crochet in the first three stitches. In the fourth stitch (row number minus one), you will place two single crochets.

Continue following this pattern, increasing by six stitches in every row. If you prefer not to do the math or need additional guidance, I have provided a pattern for the first 100 rows on my blog. Feel free to check the links in the description for that resource.

Additional Resources for Pattern

If you need more instructions or guidance, please let me know in the comments below. I am happy to provide additional guidance or add more rows to the pattern. If you prefer to follow along with one of my videos, I have included information about the yarn, crochet hook, and specific row or stitch count in the video.

Conclusion

I hope this tutorial has been helpful in creating a flat circular base using the single crochet stitch. Thank you for joining me, and I wish you a wonderful and productive crochet session.
