Introduction

In this episode of Stitch Dictionary, we will be exploring the lovely crochet block stitch. This stitch is easy to master and requires knowledge of single crochet, double crochet, and chain stitches. We will be creating a swatch using contrasting colors to showcase the stitch. So, grab your yarn and hook, and let's get started!

Materials needed

To create the crochet block stitch, you will need the following materials:

  • Yarn (preferably two contrasting colors)
  • Crochet hook (N or P 10 millimeter)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)

Starting the block stitch

To begin the block stitch, start by making a slipknot and attaching it to your hook with your main color yarn. Chain a multiple of three stitches, keeping in mind that we will be skipping three chains when we start Round 1. For example, if you want a 24-stitch wide swatch, you would chain 27 stitches.

Changing colors

To add a pop of color to your block stitch, you can change colors after completing the first row. Simply pull up a loop of your accent color yarn, leaving a tail to weave in later. Tie a knot using the accent color yarn and slide it to the right side of the loop. Insert your hook and tighten the loop. Now, work with the working yarn of your accent color.

Continuing the block stitch

With your accent color yarn, single crochet in the first stitch. Chain two and skip two stitches. Work a single crochet in the third stitch. Repeat this pattern of chain two and skip two stitches until the end of the row. You should end with a single crochet in the last stitch.

Repeating rows 2 and 3

Once you have completed the first row with the accent color, change back to your main color yarn. Chain two and turn your work. Double crochet in the top of the single crochet from the previous row. In the chain two space, make two double crochets. Repeat this pattern of double crocheting in the single crochet and making two double crochets in the chain two space until the end of the row.

Finishing the block stitch

Continue repeating rows 2 and 3, alternating between the main color and accent color, until your desired length is reached. Make sure to weave in all the ends before using the block stitch in a project.

Pros of the block stitch

  • Easy to learn and master
  • Creates a thick, woven-like fabric
  • Beautiful front and back design
  • Can be used for various projects, such as scarves and afghans

Cons of the block stitch

  • Requires frequent color changes, resulting in many ends to weave in
  • May not be suitable for intricate or detailed designs

Conclusion

The crochet block stitch is a versatile and attractive stitch that can be used in a variety of projects. With its simple construction and beautiful texture, it is a great stitch for both beginners and experienced crocheters. So, grab your yarn and hook, and give the block stitch a try!
