How to Make Crochet Bunny Ears: A Step-by-Step Guide
Are you looking to make a cute and trendy accessory? Look no further! In this tutorial, I will guide you through the process of creating crochet bunny ears. These bunny ears are similar to ones I made previously, but with an improved technique and a written pattern available. Whether you want to wear them in your hair or add them to a craft project, these crochet bunny ears will surely add a touch of whimsy to any outfit.
Materials Needed
Before we begin, let's gather all the materials you'll need for this project:
- Crochet hook (size E, 3.5 mm)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Bobby pin (for marking stitches)
- Yarn of your choice (preferably white and soft rose)
If you prefer to follow a written pattern, you can find one in my Ravelry store. The link to the pattern is provided in the description below.
Creating the Foundation Chain
To start making the crochet bunny ears, we'll begin with the foundation chain. Using the pink yarn, create a foundation chain that is the desired length for the inner ear, minus half the width you want for the inner ear. This is because we will be adding the extra half-width length at the top, after working on the inner ear.
Next, you have two options for working on the chain. You can either work your stitches into each side of the chain, or you can work slip stitches into the back loops of the chain to create a foundation chain on the other side. The latter method helps avoid gaps at the middle of the foundation.
Working the Inner Ear
Once the foundation chain is complete, it's time to work on the inner ear. This part gives the bunny ears their shape and serves as the base for the outer ear. Single crochet in the third chain from the hook and continue single crocheting on one side of the foundation until you reach the last two stitches. Increase those two stitches, turn the work, and repeat the same on the other side of the foundation chain.
For the next row, single crochet in the third chain from the hook and continue single crocheting on one side until you reach the middle four stitches. Increase each of these four stitches by single crocheting twice into each stitch. Continue single crocheting until the end of the row.
To make the inner ear wider, repeat the previous row's pattern of increasing the middle four stitches. You can continue with this pattern as desired, increasing the width of the inner ear. However, keep in mind that we will be working on the outer ear soon, so this is the final row for the inner ear.
Making the Outer Ear
Now, let's move on to making the outer ear. Using the white yarn, pull up a loop into the first stitch on one side of the inner ear. Single crochet until you reach the middle four stitches of the row. Increase each of these stitches, just like in the previous row. Continue single crocheting until the end of the row.
To make the outer ear larger, repeat the pattern of increasing the middle four stitches of the row. You can continue this pattern for a few more rows to achieve the desired size.
Decreasing the Stitches
Next, we'll work on decreasing the stitches to shape the back of the ear. Continuing the same pattern as before, chain one, single crochet in the third chain from the hook, and single crochet until you reach the middle eight stitches of the previous row. Decrease each of these eight stitches by pulling up a loop through both stitches and single crocheting together to decrease. Repeat this decrease pattern until you have four decreases.
Sewing the Back of the Ear
To close the back of the ear, use the long tail of the yarn from the last row. Thread it through a yarn needle and sew the back of the ear closed using a ladder stitch. Once the back is secure, sew in the end of the yarn to finish the ear.
Creating a Wire Skeleton (optional)
If you want your bunny ears to stand straight up, you can create a wire skeleton for support. Follow the method outlined in my wire skeleton tutorial, but make a 17-inch long piece with a loop on either side. Fold the wire in half and insert it inside the ear, sewing the loops down to either side.
Attaching the Ears
Now that both ears are complete, it's time to attach them. You can use clips and bobby pins to attach the ears in your hair for a fun and whimsical look. Alternatively, you can sew the ears onto other items like headbands, hats, cowls, or even dolls.
Conclusion
