Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome back to another K Crochets tutorial! In today's tutorial, I am excited to show you how to make the Trailhead Hooded Scarf. This project is a collaboration with the awesome We Are Knitters, and I can't wait to share it with you. So let's dive right in and see what we need to get started.

Materials Needed

Before we begin, let's gather all the materials we'll need for this project. Here's a list of items you'll need:

  • 6mm crochet hook
  • Bulky weight yarn (such as Petite Wool in the color Olive)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Threading needle
  • Stitch markers

Now that we have everything ready, let's move on to the first step.

Making a Slip Knot

To start, we need to make a slip knot. If you're not familiar with how to make one, don't worry. You can watch the video tutorial linked at the top right corner of this page to learn how. Once you have your slip knot, make sure to leave a 40-inch tail for seaming later. Now, let's move on to the next step.

Starting the Hood Section

For the hood of the scarf, we'll begin with Row 1. In this row, we'll be single crocheting in the back loop of the second chain from the hook. Then, we'll double crochet in the back loop of the next chain. The repeat for this row is single crochet, double crochet, single crochet, double crochet, and so on. Continue this pattern until you reach the end of the row, ending with a double crochet. Now, let's move on to Row 2.

Row 2: Repeat Row for the Hood

Row 2 is the repeat row for the entire hood section. Remember, the chain 1 at the beginning does not count as a stitch. In this row, we'll single crochet in the first stitch, followed by a double crochet in the second stitch. This pattern of single crochet and double crochet will be repeated across the row. At the end of the row, you should have a total of 36 stitches for the child size or 60 stitches for the adult size. Repeat Row 2 until your piece measures 17 inches for the child size or 19 inches for the adult size.

Repeating Row 2 for the Hood Length

Once you've reached the desired length for your hood section, it's time to move on to the scarf section. The stitch pattern for the scarf is the same as in the hood section: chain 1, single crochet, double crochet. However, this time, you'll only be working with 16 stitches for the child size or 22 stitches for the adult size. Repeat the single crochet and double crochet pattern across the row until you reach the designated stitch count.

Finishing off the Scarf

After completing the scarf section, it's time to repeat Row 2 once again. Repeat this row until your project, including the hood and scarf, measures 47 inches for the child size or 53 inches for the adult size. Once you've reached the desired measurement, finish off your work, leaving a 15-inch tail for the child size or a 21-inch tail for the adult size.

Seam the Scarf and Hood Together

To assemble the hooded scarf, fold over the scarf section to meet the hood section. Use stitch markers to attach the last row of the scarf to the first row of the hood, ensuring an even seam. Now it's time to start sewing them together.

I recommend using a whip stitch to seam the scarf and hood. Insert your threading needle under the top two loops of each stitch, going from one side to the other. Continue whip stitching all the way across until the scarf and hood are securely attached. Once the seam is complete, turn the scarf right side out.

Folding and Seaming the Hood

Next, fold the hood section in half, aligning the seam of the scarf with the seam of the hood. Use stitch markers to mark the top portion of the folded hood and begin seaming. Again, use the whip stitch method, going under at least two loops of each row to join the edges together. Take care to align the single crochet and double crochet stitches evenly as you sew.

Once you've finished seaming the hood, weave in any remaining ends to tidy up your work. And there you have it, your Trailhead Hooded Scarf is complete! Now you can wear it or gift it to someone special. I hope you enjoyed making this project. If you have any questions or need further clarification, feel free to leave a comment below. Happy crocheting!
