Introduction

Welcome back everyone to another historical knitting video. In this video, I will be knitting a lace doily from an 1845 pattern book. After the last project where I spent many late nights knitting stockings, I wanted to switch things up by going back in time to the Victorian era and knitting something that doesn't take as much time. The pattern I chose presents some challenges as it is written line by line and lacks a visual reference. However, this adds to the excitement as the doily reveals itself as I knit. Join me as I take on the challenge of knitting this lace doily from 1845.

Choosing the Pattern

For this project, I decided to explore an 1845 pattern book. Unlike the usual 1892 pattern book, I wanted to delve even further into the Victorian era. The pattern I chose intrigued me because it presented a unique lace design and a chance to explore historical knitting terms and techniques. However, the lack of a visual reference was a bit daunting, but I embraced the uncertainty and resolved to create my own interpretation of the doily.

Challenges and Translating the Pattern

One of the main challenges I faced with this pattern was the fact that it was written line by line in 1845 knitting terms. These terms are not commonly used today, so I had to take on the task of translating them into a format I could understand. Despite my efforts, there was one line in the pattern that didn't make sense in the context of the rest. Nevertheless, I pressed on with charting out the pattern and knitting up samples to ensure I could fully grasp the instructions.

Knitting the Doily

To begin knitting the doily, I cast on four stitches across four needles. This proved to be a bit difficult as the needles were longer than the small number of stitches. So, I casted on four stitches onto one needle and then transferred each stitch to its own needle. Finding a unique knitting style with this setup, I was able to minimize the chance of dropping or twisting stitches.

After some trial and error, I finally settled on the ideal number of stitches per needle, making the knitting process much smoother. As I progressed, I encountered a few challenges due to the intricate lace pattern and the use of multiple needles. However, with patience and practice, I was able to master the technique and create a doily that matched my vision.

Blocking and Finishing

Once I completed knitting the doily, it was time for the final touches. Following the pattern instructions, I selected an edging to trim the doily width. I charted out the lace pattern for the chosen edging and found it surprisingly easy to memorize and work with. Stitching the lace edging to the doily required careful sewing techniques to ensure the lace pattern would open up evenly during blocking.

Since I didn't have dedicated blocking mats or pins, I improvised with a piece of cardboard and some sewing pins. After wetting the doily and wringing out the excess moisture, I carefully stretched and pinned the doily to the cardboard, focusing on the corners first and then working my way around in a circular motion. The transformation during blocking was awe-inspiring as the intricate lacework began to open up beautifully.

The next morning, I eagerly removed the pins, and to my delight, the doily held its shape perfectly. It was incredibly satisfying to see the lacework in all its glory. The doily was finally complete and ready to be admired.

Final Thoughts and Pattern Notes

In conclusion, knitting this lace doily from an 1845 pattern proved to be an exciting and rewarding project. The challenges of translating the pattern and working without a visual reference pushed my knitting skills to new heights. The finished doily exceeded my expectations, and I believe it would make a stunning addition to any home decor.

Throughout the project, I took detailed notes on the pattern, capturing the fixes and modifications I made along the way. These notes serve as both a personal reference and a resource for others who want to attempt this historical knitting project. I encourage you to give it a try and experience the joy of knitting a piece of history.
