How to Make Your Own Crochet Christmas Garland

Are you feeling crafty this holiday season? Look no further! In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create your very own crochet Christmas garland. With just a few simple materials and some basic crochet stitches, you'll have a festive decoration to hang around your home in no time.

Materials Needed

To get started, gather the following materials:

  1. Two different colors of worsted weight yarn
  2. Size H or 5mm crochet hook
  3. Pair of scissors
  4. Two stitch markers

You can find the pattern for this garland on yarnspirations.com. I've included a link to the pattern in the video description, so be sure to check it out before you begin. Once you have your pattern and materials ready, we can start making some fun garland!

Starting the Garland

To begin, make a slipknot on your crochet hook and chain the number of chains specified in the pattern. The stitch multiple for this garland is six plus two, so make sure your chains are a multiple of six and add two extra chains at the end.

Row 1

In Row 1 of the garland, start with a single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Use one of the stitch markers to mark the chain that was skipped. Skip two chains and then work three double crochets into the next chain. After that, create a picot by chaining three and slip stitching into the third chain. Continue with three more double crochets in the same chain as before.

Next, skip two chains and single crochet in the next chain. Repeat this pattern all the way down the row. For larger garlands, you may have more repeats, but remember to keep the pattern consistent.

Row 2

Rotate your work to the bottom edge of the stitches you just made. Work a single crochet around the two chains that were skipped. This will create a smooth transition between rows. On the second single crochet, pause and change color, bringing in your second color of yarn.

Once you have changed colors, work a popcorn stitch into the center of the shell created in the previous row. To do this, make four single crochets and on the last single crochet, pull through with the new color. This will create a raised popcorn effect.

Jump over to the two chains that were skipped and work two single crochets. Then, continue to the next two skipped chains and repeat with two more single crochets.

To create another popcorn stitch, make four single crochets and then pull through with the original color. Make sure the second color is held in place so that you can work around it. Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the row.

Row 3

Start Row 3 with a chain one and a single crochet in the first single crochet. From here, locate the red section of the popcorn stitch in the previous row. Place three double crochets in the same stitch as this section.

Create a picot by chaining three and slip stitching into the third chain. Instead of working the next three double crochets into the same stitch, work them into the next stitch for a better visual effect.

Continue with a single crochet in the center stitch of the three single crochets from the previous row. Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the row.

Finishing Off

To finish off your garland, simply cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Fasten off your work by doing a chain one and cutting the yarn. You can then tuck in any loose ends or weave them in. Your crochet Christmas garland is now complete!

Now that you know how to create this fun and festive garland, you can experiment with different colors and lengths to suit your holiday decor. Hang it on your Christmas tree, mantle, or staircase for a cozy and homemade touch to your celebrations.

Happy crocheting and happy holidays from Marley Bird!
