Introduction

Welcome to the Yarn Necklaces channel! In today's tutorial, I'm going to show you how to make a crocheted seashell necklace. This project combines two of my favorite things: seashells and crocheting. The best part about this necklace is that you can adjust its length to your liking. Whether you want a long necklace or a choker, this tutorial has got you covered. So, let's gather our supplies and get started!

Supplies Needed

Before we dive into the tutorial, let's make sure we have all the necessary supplies. Here's what you'll need:

  1. Scissors: To cut the yarn and thread.
  2. Crochet hook: I recommend using a size 4 (3.5 millimeter) hook.
  3. Seashells: You'll only need about seven seashells for this project. Choose seashells of various sizes to create a visually appealing necklace.
  4. Bamboo yarn: This tutorial uses a millimeter and a half thick bamboo yarn, but you can use other similar yarn options like cotton yarn.
  5. Wire: This optional piece of wire will help you thread the yarn through the beads. It comes in handy if you have a challenging time threading the yarn.
  6. Ruler: A ruler will help you measure and ensure accuracy during the process.

Creating a Slip Knot

We'll start by creating a slip knot, which will serve as the foundation for our crocheting. Follow these steps:

  1. Take the bamboo yarn and make a loop.
  2. Pull one end of the yarn through the loop, creating a knot. Make sure it's secure but not too tight.
  3. Insert your crochet hook into the loop, making sure it's easy to move along the yarn.

Chaining Three Stitches

Now that we have our slip knot, it's time to make some chains. Let's begin:

  1. With the slip knot on your crochet hook, start by chaining three stitches.
  2. Take the wire and thread a seashell onto it. This will allow you to easily attach the seashell to the necklace.
  3. Thread the wire through the back of the seashell, coming out from the front. Make sure the seashell is facing the way you want it to appear on the necklace.
  4. Remove the wire and pull the thread through the loop. Tighten the thread around the seashell, creating a secure attachment.
  5. Make another chain of seven stitches, ensuring they are of the same size as the previous stitches.
  6. Repeat the process of threading a seashell onto the wire, pulling the thread through the loop, and securing the seashell in place.
  7. Continue chaining seven stitches and attaching seashells until you reach the desired length of the necklace. Remember to vary the sizes of the seashells to maintain an aesthetically pleasing design.

Attaching Seashells

When attaching the seashells, consider the orientation and positioning on the necklace. You can choose to have all the seashells facing the same way or create a design with alternating orientations. It's entirely up to you and your personal preference.

Continuing the Chain

Continue chaining seven stitches and attaching seashells until you reach the end of the necklace. This process may take some time, but remember to enjoy the creative journey.

Single Crocheting

Once you've reached the end of the necklace, it's time to add some finishing touches. Follow these steps:

  1. Make a chain of four stitches.
  2. Chain another three stitches for stability.
  3. Insert your crochet hook into the fourth chain from the seashell and single crochet. This creates a neat and secure loop.
  4. Repeat this process for the remaining chains, ensuring the necklace is securely connected.

Joining the Necklaces

Now that we have completed our initial necklace, we can move on to creating the tie. Here's how to do it:

  1. Set the first necklace aside and start from the last single crochet on the second necklace.
  2. Fold the tail of the yarn over and crochet over it as you did previously.
  3. Single crochet in each stitch of the second necklace until the end.
  4. Once you reach the end, chain about 14 inches of thread, approximately 75 chains. Adjust the length according to your preference.
  5. Cut the excess thread, leaving enough to tie a knot.
  6. Tie a knot close to the last chain made in the second necklace.
  7. Cut any excess thread.

Adding the Tie

The tie allows you to adjust the length of the necklace and secure it around your neck. Here's how to add it:

  1. Take the first necklace and measure its length against your neck. Adjust it to your desired length.
  2. Tie a knot at the end of the tie to secure it.
  3. Cut any excess thread, leaving a tidy finish.
  4. You can tie the necklace in a bow behind your neck, creating a stylish and convenient closure.

Finalizing the Necklace

To ensure the finished necklace looks its best, consider spraying it with a little starch spray if you notice any curling. The weight of the seashells should prevent excessive curling. Now, your crocheted seashell necklace is complete!
