Materials Needed
Before we begin, let's gather all the materials we'll need for this project. Here's a list of what you'll need:
- I Love This Yarn, size 4 medium worsted (white)
- Bernat Pipsqueak, size 5 bulk (red)
- Scissors
- Size 4.5 hook
- Ruler
Step 1: Starting the Hat
- Begin by going around your finger twice and bring one loop to the front.
- Grab the other loop and pull it through the first loop.
- Chain three to start the hat.
- Make six double crochet stitches on the third chain from the hook. To make a double crochet, yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over, pull through two loops, and yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops.
- Insert the hook on top of the first double crochet and make a slip stitch to join the round.
- Before continuing, make a knot on the back of the hat.
- Chain two and make one double crochet in the same space.
Step 2: Working the Pattern
Now that we have our base, let's start working the pattern for the hat.
-
Round 1-8: Make one double crochet on each stitch around. Join each round with a slip stitch on top of the first double crochet. Repeat this pattern for a total of 8 rounds.
-
Round 9-15: Increase the hat size by following a pattern of 2 double crochet, 1 double crochet, 1 double crochet. Join each round with a slip stitch on top of the first double crochet. Repeat this pattern for a total of 7 rounds.
-
Round 16: Make one double crochet on each stitch around. Join the round with a slip stitch on top of the first double crochet. This completes the body of the hat.
Step 3: Making the Pom Pom
To add a fun and playful touch to the hat, let's make a pom pom.
- Go around your finger twice and bring one loop to the front.
- Grab the other loop and pull it through the first loop.
- Attach the pom pom to the top of the hat by inserting the tail through the center of the hat and pulling it tight.
Step 4: Attaching the Pom Pom
To securely attach the pom pom to the hat, follow these steps:
- Attach a piece of yarn to the back of the hat, making a slip knot.
- Chain four and make a front post triple crochet stitch on the first double crochet. To make a front post triple crochet, go behind the stitch, pull the yarn through, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through two loops, and yarn over again, pulling through the last two loops.
- Make two triple crochet stitches on the back of each double crochet around the hat. This will create a total of 14 triple crochet stitches.
- Join the round with a slip stitch on top of the first triple crochet.
- Chain four and make one double crochet in each triple crochet stitch around. This should result in a total of 14 double crochet stitches.
- Join the round with a slip stitch on top of the first double crochet.
- Cut the yarn and secure it by making a knot.
- Bring the pom pom to the center of the hat and use the remaining yarn to make a knot, securing the pom pom in place.
And that's it! You've successfully completed your baby hat with a pom pom. This hat measures approximately 11 inches in length and 6.5 inches in width.
