Introduction

Welcome to another crochet tutorial from the Vintage Crochet series! In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a beautiful triangle shawl inspired by the one worn by Claire in the Outlander series. This shawl features a unique black strip and is incredibly easy to crochet. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crocheter, you'll enjoy making this stunning vintage piece. So grab your materials and let's get started!

Vintage Crochet Series

Before diving into the tutorial, let's talk about the Vintage Crochet series. If you're new to my channel, I have a collection of vintage crochet tutorials that you can check out. Inspiration from the Outlander Shawl

The idea for this shawl came from the shawl worn by Claire in the Outlander series. I was captivated by its beauty and wanted to recreate it using crochet techniques. On my blog, you'll find plenty of pictures of the original shawl for reference. I've also created a free pattern that you can download from my website, celinaveronique.com. All the necessary links will be provided in the description below, so make sure to check them out.

Materials Needed

To make this crochet shawl, you will need the following:

  • Three skeins of Stylecraft Special Aran yarn in the shade Sage
  • One skein of Stylecraft Special Aran yarn in the shade Black
  • A 6mm crochet hook
  • A tapestry needle
  • A pair of scissors

That's all you need to get started on this project. Now let's move on to the tutorial and learn how to create this beautiful shawl step by step.

Getting Started

To begin, we'll start by creating the base of the shawl. Take your 6mm crochet hook and make a slip knot. Insert your hook into the slip knot and chain four. Then, slip stitch through the first chain to form a ring. This will be the starting point for our shawl.

Next, chain three, which will count as your first double crochet. We'll be placing five more double crochets within the circle. Once you've completed the six double crochets, chain two and go back into the circle to place six more double crochets. This completes the first row of our shawl.

Adding the Black Strip

Now, we'll move on to the second row of the shawl. Chain three, which again counts as your first double crochet. In this row, we'll be placing another double crochet within the first stitch to create two double crochets together. Then, continue placing a double crochet in each stitch across. When you reach the chain two space, place two double crochets, chain two, and place two more double crochets in the same space.

Repeat this pattern on the other side of the shawl, placing a double crochet in each stitch until you reach the last stitch. Finish off with two double crochets in the last stitch. This completes the second row of the shawl.

Continuing the Pattern

Continue repeating the pattern from the second row, increasing the size of the shawl as you go along. Each row will follow the same pattern of placing double crochets in each stitch, with increases in the chain two spaces. Repeat this pattern until you've completed 33 rounds of the sage color. Feel free to make the shawl larger if desired.

Changing Colors

Once you've completed the 33 rounds with the sage color, it's time to add the black strip to the shawl. Fasten off the sage yarn and attach the black yarn to the bottom corner of the shawl. Chain three, which will count as your first double crochet. Continue with the same pattern as before, placing double crochets in each stitch.

Work two rows of the black yarn, following the pattern of the sage color. After completing the black rows, switch back to the sage yarn and repeat the pattern for two more rows. Alternate between the sage and black colors, following the pattern, until your shawl reaches the desired size and length.

Finishing the Shawl

To finish off the shawl, fasten off the yarn and weave in any loose ends. Give your shawl a gentle block to shape it nicely. You can now proudly wear or gift this beautiful Outlander-inspired shawl and enjoy the vintage charm it brings to your outfit.
