Introduction

Welcome back to Nikki's homemade crafts! In this crochet tutorial, we will be making a stylish Crown Cowl using only two colors and basic crochet stitches. This pattern is part of the Advent calendar crochet along, where a new pattern is released every day for a total of 30 patterns. If you want to access all 30 patterns in an eBook, check the link provided in the description or visit my website. Let's get started with this quick crochet project!

Materials Needed

Before we begin, make sure you have the following materials:

  • Worsted acrylic yarn in two colors (e.g., Vanna's Choice by Lion Brand)
  • G plus crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Crochet Pattern Overview

The Crown Cowl is crocheted in a multiple of eight, allowing you to easily adjust the size of the cowl. We will start by making a chain, then join it to form a loop. Next, we will work on creating the body of the cowl using the two chosen colors in a specific pattern. Finally, we will finish the cowl by changing colors and repeating the color pattern. Let's jump into the step-by-step instructions!

Step 1: Starting the Crown Cowl

4.1 Making the Chain

To begin, make a chain of 80 stitches. If you want a smaller or larger cowl, adjust the number of stitches accordingly, keeping it as a multiple of eight. Once you have made the chain, slip stitch to the first chain you made to form a loop. Make sure you have 80 stitches in total.

4.2 Joining the Chain

Now it's time to start crocheting! Begin with a double crochet or an equivalent turning chain. For a stacked single crochet alternative, start with a single crochet and insert your hook into the loop closest to your yarn finger. Pull up a loop and finish it off like another single crochet. This stitch counts as a stitch in your pattern. Follow this by crocheting four more double crochets, one in each stitch. Then, chain two, skip one stitch, and crochet one single crochet in the following stitch. Continue this sequence by chaining two, skipping one stitch, and repeating until the end of the round. Slip stitch to the first stitch, preferably using the invisible slip stitch method.

Step 2: Crocheting the Body of the Crown Cowl

5.1 Crocheting with Color 1

Now it's time to switch colors and introduce the second color. Drop the outer color and attach the alternate color. Start with a single crochet, followed by four more single crochets, one in each stitch. Chain one and crochet one double crochet bobble down to the single crochet stitch. To create the bobble stitch, crochet three unfinished double crochets in the same stitch, then yarn over and pull through all four loops. Chain one and repeat this pattern: one single crochet on top of each double crochet, chain one, and one bobble stitch. Repeat this pattern until the end of the round.

5.2 Switching to Color 2

After completing the last chain of one in the previous round, do an invisible slip stitch to finish it off. Now it's time to bring back the first color. Start with an alternative turning chain (or equivalent of a double crochet) and chain two. Skip one stitch and crochet one single crochet. Chain two, skip one stitch, and crochet five double crochets, one in each stitch. Repeat this sequence of chaining two, skipping one stitch, and crocheting one single crochet until the end of the round. You should end up with four double crochet stitches.

5.3 Continuing with Color 1

For this round, repeat the same pattern used when crocheting with Color 1. Chain two, skip one stitch, and crochet one single crochet. Chain two, skip one stitch, and crochet five double crochets, one in each stitch. Repeat this sequence until the end of the round. Continue this sequence throughout each round to build the body of the Crown Cowl.

5.4 Repeating the Color Pattern

Keep repeating the color pattern with Color 1 and Color 2 until you have a total of seven striped colors. Adjust the pattern according to your desired length and color arrangement. Once you have reached the desired number of rounds, fasten off and weave in the ends.

Step 3: Finishing the Crown Cowl

6.1 Changing Colors

In the final step, we will add a finishing touch to the Crown Cowl by changing colors. Drop the outer color and attach the next color you want to work with. Start with a single crochet, followed by a chain of one and a bobble stitch, just like we did previously. Chain one and crochet one single crochet on top of each of the double crochet stitches.

6.2 Repeating the Color Pattern

Continue repeating the same pattern for this round: chain one, one double crochet bobble stitch, chain one, and one single crochet on top of each double crochet stitch. Repeat this pattern until the end of the round.

6.3 Fastening Off and Weaving in Ends

Once you have completed the last round, finish it off with an invisible slip stitch. Fasten off the yarn and weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle. Your Crown Cowl is now complete!
