How to Make a Crochet Lavender Bookmark

Welcome to my YouTube channel! I'm Natasha, a crochet artist, tutor, and designer at My Creative Butterfly. With over 25 years of experience in crochet, I have designed crochet patterns for all levels, from beginners to advanced. In today's video, I will show you how to crochet these beautiful lavender bookmarks. As spring approaches, these bookmarks make the perfect gift for book lovers.

Materials Needed

Before we begin, let's gather the materials required to make these quick and easy lavender flower bookmarks:

  • Size 10 100% crochet cotton thread (light and dark purple for the flower, and leaf green for the stem and string)
  • 2mm crochet hook
  • Sharp pair of scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing the bookmark
  • Optional: Spray starch or liquid starch for blocking
  • Blocking board or multiple folded towel

Step 1: Making the Lavender Florets

To start, we will create the lavender florets that form the flower on the bookmark. Follow these steps:

3.1 Starting the First Side of the Flower

  1. Make a slip knot and place it on the hook.
  2. Use the purple thread to make three chains.
  3. Make a double crochet in the third chain from the hook.
  4. Chain two.
  5. Do a slip stitch in the same chain where you did the double crochet.

Congratulations, you have completed the first floret of your lavender flower!

3.2 Working on the Second Side of the Flower

  1. Chain five.
  2. Repeat the same pattern: double crochet in the third chain from the hook, chain two, and slip stitch in the same chain as the double crochet.
  3. Continue making florets by repeating the above steps. Remember to skip the chains where the previous florets are made.
  4. Adjust the number of florets on each side according to your preference. For this tutorial, we will make six florets on one side and five on the other side.

3.3 Completing the Florets

  1. Finish the first side by making the desired number of florets.
  2. Start the second side by using slip stitches to move to the other side of the chain and repeat the same pattern as before.
  3. Make sure to skip the chains where the florets are already made on the first side.
  4. Continue until you reach the base of the flower.

Step 2: Adding the Stem and String of the Bookmark

Now, we will add the stem and string of the bookmark using the green thread. Follow these steps:

  1. Pull the loop of the green thread through the loop of the purple thread and tighten the purple thread.
  2. Start working with the green thread.
  3. Create the leaf by making a chain of five.
  4. Slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, then single crochet in the remaining three chains.
  5. Make a slip stitch at the base of the last floret to attach the leaf.
  6. Make a chain of your desired length for the bookmark. We recommend 30 chains for a standard length.
  7. Optionally, create a small leaf at the base of the chain by making double crochets and slip stitches.
  8. Secure the ends of both the green and purple threads by weaving them in with a tapestry needle.

Step 3: Blocking the Bookmark

To give your bookmark a neat and polished look, you can choose to block it. There are two methods you can follow:

  1. Wet blocking: Wet the bookmark, remove excess water, gently shape it with your fingers, and let it dry completely in shade.
  2. Starch blocking: Apply starch liberally to the bookmark, ensuring even absorption. Gently stretch and shape the florets, leaf, stem, and bottom. Let it dry completely in shade.
