How to Make a Crochet Spider

Introduction

In this tutorial, we will be learning how to crochet a cute little spider appliqué or hanging decoration. This versatile project can be used for Halloween or any other occasion. You can choose your desired yarn and hook size, as long as they correspond. For this tutorial, we will be using a double knit acrylic yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook. Let's get started!

Making a Magic Ring

To begin, let's start by making a magic ring. If you're not familiar with this technique, you can refer to the Crochet Basics playlist on my channel for a detailed tutorial. Once we have our magic ring ready, we will proceed to single crochet 18 stitches into the ring. This will create the spider's body. Feel free to adjust the tension of the ring to your preference, but be careful not to make it too tight as it will make it harder to work into the stitches as we go around.

Single Crocheting the Spider's Body

Now that we have created the magic ring and single crocheted the spider's body, it's time to move on to the legs. We will start by creating a chain of 10 and then slip stitching into the first four chains to form the first leg. Repeat this process for each leg. Slip stitch into the first chain, then slip stitch into the next three chains to create four slip stitches. For the fifth chain, we will create a slip stitch increase by working two slip stitches into the same chain space. Finish the leg by slip stitching into the final four chain spaces. To complete the leg, slip stitch into the very first single crochet that we created on the spider's body.

Creating the First Leg

To create the first leg, make a chain of 10. Then, slip stitch into the first four chains, starting in the second chain from the hook. Repeat this process for each leg, slip stitching into the first chain, second chain, third chain, and fourth chain to create four slip stitches. For the fifth chain, we will create a slip stitch increase by working two slip stitches into the same chain space. Complete the leg by slip stitching into the final four chain spaces. Finally, close the ring by slip stitching into the very first single crochet that we created on the spider's body.

Completing Legs 2-4

To create legs 2-4, make a chain of 14 for each leg. Slip stitch into the first six chains, starting in the second chain from the hook. For the next chain space, create a slip stitch increase by working two slip stitches into the same chain space. Finish the leg by slip stitching into the final six chain spaces. For leg number four, skip the next chain space and slip stitch into the following one to create a decrease. Complete the leg by slip stitching into the final seven chain spaces. Slip stitch into the next available stitch base of the body to finish the leg.

Adding the Fangs

Now it's time to add the spider's fangs. Slip stitch into the next stitch of the body to finish the leg. Create a chain of three and slip stitch back down into the two chain spaces. Slip stitch into the next available stitch base of the body to complete the first fang. Repeat the same process for the second fang, creating a chain of three, slipping into the two chain spaces, and slipping into the next available stitch base. This will give the spider its defining fangs.

Working on Legs 5-7

For legs 5-7, create a chain of 14 for each leg. Slip stitch into the first five chain spaces, starting in the second chain from the hook. For the next chain space, create a slip stitch increase by working two slip stitches into the same chain space. Finish the leg by slip stitching into the final seven chain spaces. For leg number seven, create a decrease by skipping the next chain space and working a slip stitch into the next one. Slip stitch into the next available stitch base on the body to complete the leg.

Forming the Final Leg

To create the final leg, make a chain of 11. Slip stitch into the first four chain spaces. Create a decrease by skipping the next chain space and slipping into the following one. Finish the leg by slip stitching into the final four chain spaces. Complete the leg by slip stitching into the spider's body. This will give the spider its full set of eight legs.

Shaping the Spider's Body

To shape the spider's body, slip stitch into the next space after completing the leg. Next, single crochet into the next two spaces, repeat this in the following two spaces as well. This will create two slip stitches and two single crochets, shaping the spider's body. Finish off by slip stitching into the final two stitch bases. This will give the spider a rounded and defined shape.

Finishing Touches

To complete the spider, finish off any loose ends and manipulate the legs into the desired shape. Bend the legs in the right direction, paying attention to the increases and decreases. You can also bend the fangs to create a more realistic look. If you want to use the spider as a hanging decoration, you can pull up some yarn through the center hole created by the magic ring, and knot the other end to create a hanging loop.

That's it! You have now successfully crocheted a cute little spider appliqué or hanging decoration. Feel free to customize it by using different yarn colors or adding embellishments.
