The Under the Sea Wreath: A Crochet Journey
Hey friends, welcome back to Llama Mama, Kayla's Yarn Tube! I thank you for stopping by for a visit today; I hope you are doing well and having a great day. Today, I want to give you a little update about the crocheted mermaid that I'm making for the under the sea wreath that I am planning to enter into our local fair.
The Under the Sea Wreath
This year, I decided to participate in the ArkLamiss Fair, which is the fair in our area covering Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The fair will be held from September 30th to October. I already have a lot of crochet projects that can be entered into the fair, but there are a few categories that I haven't made anything for. So, I am making a wreath to enter into the fair.
The ArkLamiss Fair
In Louisiana, we don't have counties; instead, we have parishes. I live in Ouachita Parish, and the fair I am referring to is the ArkLamiss Fair, which covers our area. It's a significant event that lasts for about two weeks, and I am excited to participate this year.
The Making of the Wreath
For the under the sea theme, I decided to draw inspiration from Olive's book, "Plenty of Fish in the Sea." The book features 20 amigurumi ocean crochet patterns. Olive, the author, has a website called Stringy Ding Ding, where she sells the book and offers a wide range of patterns. I have already done a review on her book and highly recommend it for both beginners and experienced crocheters.
Review of Olive's Book
"Plenty of Fish in the Sea" is an amazing book with well-detailed patterns and plenty of pictures to guide you through the process. Olive has done a fabulous job making the patterns easy to follow. If you're a beginner, this book is perfect for you. Even if you're an experienced crocheter, you'll appreciate the simplicity and clarity of the patterns.
Using Olive's book, I started making the crocheted mermaid for my wreath. However, I decided not to give her red hair to avoid resembling Ariel from "The Little Mermaid." I wanted her to stand out on her own. But now comes the dilemma - what color hair should she have?
Choosing the Mermaid's Hair Color
After sharing my project on my channel, my viewers came up with several suggestions for the mermaid's hair color. Pink, purple, brown, coral, green, gold - the possibilities are endless. While I love all the suggestions, I am still undecided on the color.
I want to place the mermaid on the side of the wreath, next to a purple jellyfish. So, I am torn between giving her purple hair or choosing a different color that complements the jellyfish. Some viewers suggested waiting until I've completed all the critters and placing them on the wreath to see which hair color suits best. That's a smart suggestion, and I'm leaning towards following it.
Plans for More Mermaids
Apart from the mermaid for the wreath, I have plans to make more retro stripe mermaids in different skin tones. I want to create variations with lighter and darker skin, including brown-toned skins. This will add diversity to the wreath and make each mermaid unique.
Other Critters and Fish
In addition to the mermaids, I am also working on making various sea creatures and fish to add to the under the sea wreath. These little amigurumi creatures will make the wreath come alive and enhance the overall theme.
Preparing the Wreath Form
Before assembling all the crocheted pieces onto the wreath, I need to prepare the wreath form. I plan to use pipe cleaners or zip ties to attach the critters securely to the form. This way, if I or someone else wishes to remove the critters at a later date, it can be done easily without damaging the wreath.
When it comes to attaching the crocheted pieces, I have opted for hot glue instead of sewing. As someone with hand issues, sewing can be challenging and painful for me. Hot glue offers a great alternative, and it is equally effective. However, if sewing is your forte, feel free to use that method.
Daily Progress Updates
I will be sharing my daily progress on my channel as I complete each amigurumi critter for the wreath. This way, you can join me on this crochet journey and see how the project unfolds.
Putting It All Together
Once all the mermaids, critters, and fish are completed, I will start assembling the wreath. I will be using tool and pipe cleaners to create a beautiful under the sea scene. I am also considering making a video to show you the process and share the final result.
Conclusion
Crocheting the under the sea wreath for the ArkLamiss Fair has been an exciting project. With Olive's book and the support and suggestions from my viewers, I am confident that the wreath will turn out amazing. Stay tuned for more updates and progress videos on my channel.
