Introduction
Welcome to my channel! In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to crochet an easy and fun shawl using Lion Brand Mandela yarn. This pattern is perfect for beginners and can be customized to your liking. So grab your crochet hook and let's get started!
Materials Needed
Before we begin, let's gather all the materials you will need for this project. You will need:
- 1 J or 6mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Optional: something to make fringe with (such as a Susan Bates knit check or a piece of cardboard)
- 3 skeins of Lion Brand Mandela yarn (or any yarn of your choice)
Pattern Overview
The shawl we will be making is a triangular shawl using the moss stitch (also known as the linen stitch). It is a simple and versatile pattern that can be easily adjusted to your desired size. You can also add fringe for an extra touch of style. Now let's dive into the pattern!
Starting the Shawl
To start the shawl, make a slip knot and place it on your crochet hook. We will begin with Row 1.
Row 1
Chain 2, then in the second chain from your hook, work a single crochet. Chain 1, then work another single crochet in the same chain space. Chain 2, and work another single crochet in the same chain space. This completes Row 1.
Row 2
Chain 1 and turn your work. In the first stitch, work a single crochet. Chain 1, then work a single crochet in the next chain space. Repeat this pattern of chain 1 and single crochet in each chain space until you reach the chain 2 space. In the chain 2 space, work a single crochet, chain 2, and another single crochet. Chain 1, then work a single crochet in the next chain space. Continue this pattern to the end of the row.
Row 3
Chain 1 and turn your work. In the first stitch, work a single crochet. Chain 1, then work a single crochet in each chain space across until you reach the chain 2 space. In the chain 2 space, work a single crochet, chain 2, and another single crochet. Chain 1, then work a single crochet in each chain space across to the end of the row.
Repeating Rows
Continue repeating Row 3 until your shawl reaches the desired size. You can customize the length by adding or subtracting rows. I made mine with 84 rows, but feel free to make it smaller or larger according to your preference.
Optional Fringe
To add fringe to your shawl, you can use a piece of cardboard or a Susan Bates knit check to wrap the yarn around. Cut 12-inch lengths of yarn and wrap them around the cardboard or knit check, depending on the desired length of your fringe.
Once you have your fringe ready, attach it to your shawl by inserting a smaller crochet hook into each stitch along the edges and pulling the fringe through, securing it with a knot. Repeat this process for each stitch and along the corners if desired.
Finishing Touches
Once you have added fringe to all sides of your shawl, weave in any loose ends and trim if necessary. Your shawl is now complete!
