The Challenges of Storm Damage and Summer Heat: A Crafter's Journey
The scorching days of summer and unforeseen storms can wreak havoc on homes and disrupt the plans of avid crafters like myself. In this article, I will take you on a journey through the challenges I have faced due to storm damage and the relentless summer heat. From roof replacements to filming obstacles, join me as I navigate my way through these hurdles and continue pursuing my passion for crafting.
Storm Damage and Repairs
Living in Oklahoma, I am no stranger to the destructive power of storms. A couple of months ago, our area was hit by tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail, which resulted in various repairs needed for our home. The repairs include:
- Roof Replacement: The storms left our roof in shambles, necessitating a complete replacement. Although the roofing work has been completed, there are still other repairs pending.
- Siding Replacement: Alongside the roof, the hail also damaged the siding of our house, requiring a comprehensive replacement process.
- Window Replacement: Many of the windows in our home were shattered by the intense hail, and they must be replaced to ensure the safety and functionality of our living space.
- Gutter Replacement: The hail and wind also wreaked havoc on our gutters, rendering them ineffective. New gutters need to be installed to prevent further damage.
- Shed Roof Replacement: Our shed roof was not spared from the storm's fury either. The damaged roof needs to be replaced to preserve the integrity of the shed.
- Fence Repair: Furthermore, the strong winds caused significant damage to our fence, resulting in the need for repair work.
Summer Heat and Construction
In addition to the storm damage repairs, the sweltering summer heat became an additional challenge. With heat index temperatures soaring into the hundred and teens and even reaching the 120s, it was crucial to consider the safety of the workers and the limitations of working during such extreme conditions.
The roofing company had initially scheduled the repairs for a weekend to avoid the intense midday heat. However, due to the urgency of the repairs, they had to reschedule for a weekday. The heat made it nearly impossible for them to work for extended periods, leading to split workdays that started in the early morning when the temperatures were relatively cooler. This shift in scheduling affected my plans as well, as I had to delay the filming of my YouTube videos until the construction work was completed.
Finished Projects
Amidst these challenges, I managed to complete a few projects. One of them is a beautiful cardigan that I am absolutely in love with. The cardigan features big bell sleeves and falls just to the mid-hip, providing a comfortable and stylish fit. I added a button at the top to complete the look.
Another finished project is a bandana made with the same vibrant red yarn as the cardigan. I completed the bandana with a picot edge, giving it a cute and decorative touch. The bandana is versatile and can be worn in various styles, making it a perfect accessory to complement the cardigan.
WIPs (Works in Progress)
While dealing with the challenges posed by storm repairs and intense heat, I have also made progress on two shawls. One of them is the big moss triangle shawl, which I previously shared in my "Works in Progress" video. The shawl is nearing completion, and I hope to showcase it in my next video of finished items.
The other shawl I am working on is the petite knit Sophie shawl, which I introduced in my very first "Works in Progress" video. I have reached the midway point of the shawl, where I begin the decreasing process. With each round of decreases, the shawl gets smaller, and I am on track to finish it soon.
Filming Setup and Tutorials
Despite the challenges presented by the ongoing construction work, I have made adjustments to optimize my filming setup for future tutorials. I recently acquired a new tripod that allows for a top-down view, which is ideal for demonstrating my crafting techniques. This new setup will enable me to provide more detailed and informative tutorials for my viewers. With everything in place, I am excited to start filming and sharing my knowledge with fellow crafting enthusiasts.
As fall approaches, I am also considering the types of tutorials I want to create. While summer projects are enjoyable, I am eager to transition to fall-themed crafts that will be ready to use when the weather cools down. From cozy scarves to knitted accessories, there are plenty of exciting projects on the horizon.
Conclusion
Although storm damage and summer heat have presented their fair share of challenges, I have persevered in pursuing my crafting endeavors. From completing my cardigan and bandana to making progress on my shawls, every step forward brings me closer to achieving my crafting goals. With a new and improved filming setup, I am ready to embark on creating informative and inspiring tutorials. As summer fades and fall whispers its arrival, I eagerly anticipate the cozy projects that lie ahead.
