Crochet Bag Project: A Step-by-Step Guide

Crocheting is not only a way to produce items for your business but also a relaxing and recreational hobby. In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating a beautiful crochet bag. We will cover the project selection, yarn choice, design inspiration, pattern adaptation, the necessary materials, and the construction of the bag and handles. By the end of this guide, you will have a gorgeous crochet bag to add to your collection. So let's get started!

1. Introduction

Are you looking for a new crochet project to reignite your motivation? Look no further! In this guide, we will embark on a crochet bag project together. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crocheter, this project is sure to challenge and inspire you.

2. Project Selection

To kick off our project, we took to Instagram polls to get your input on what we should make. After 24 hours of polling, the results are in: we will be making a crochet bag. The chosen yarn for this project is a lovely dusky pink shade, and we have about 50g of it.

3. Yarn Choice

The yarn we will be using for this project is the King Cole Big Value DK acrylic yarn in the shade Clay. Its soft and durable texture makes it perfect for creating a bag that will withstand everyday use. Additionally, we have a sage green DK acrylic yarn for the stems of the flowers and a chunky cream yarn for the flower itself.

4. Design Inspiration

Inspiration can come from many sources, and for this project, we found inspiration in a floral motif on a bag we already own. The bag's design features beautiful tulips, which we will incorporate into our pattern. The tulips will be created using a v-stitch and a puff stitch.

5. Pattern Adaptation

As we mentioned earlier, the cream yarn we have for the flowers is chunky, while the main yarn is DK weight. This difference in weight requires some modifications to the pattern to ensure a consistent look. Throughout this guide, we will provide guidance on how to adjust the pattern if you decide to use different weights of yarn.

6. Materials Needed

Before we dive into the project, let's gather all the materials we will need:

  • 50g of DK yarn for the main color of the bag
  • Extra yarn for the flowers
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Sewing needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors

Now that we have everything we need let's start crocheting our bag!

7. Bag Construction

Row 1: Creating the Base

To begin, we will chain 42 and start in the second chain from the hook. Make 40 half double crochet (hdc) stitches across and then make 2 hdc in the last chain. Mark the 42nd hdc and turn the chain over to repeat the process, making 40 hdc along the other side. This will create the base of our bag.

Rows 2-8: Increasing the Width

For the next seven rows, we will repeat even rows of 84 hdc in the round. Make sure to keep the stitch marker to mark the beginning of each row. At the end of row 8, slip stitch in the beginning stitch, chain 1, and tie off.

Row 9: Adding Tulip Motifs

Now it's time to add the beautiful tulip motifs to our bag. Attach the sage green yarn with a slip stitch in the slip stitch where you tied off the previous yarn. Chain 4 and make a double crochet (dc) in the same stitch. Chain 1, skip 2 stitches, and double crochet in the 3rd stitch. Repeat this process, chaining 2 and double crocheting in the same stitch, until the end of row 9. Finish with a chain 1 and slip stitch halfway up the beginning chain 4. Chain 1 and tie off.

Row 10: Creating Petal Sections

For row 10, we will work on creating the petal sections of the tulips. Attach the cream chunky acrylic yarn with a slip stitch on the chain 2 space from the previous row. Chain 2 and double crochet in the same space. Chain 1 and make a puff stitch in the next chain space. Repeat this process, increasing the number of double crochets for the puff stitch as needed, until the end of row 10. Finish with a chain 1, slip stitch in the beginning double crochet, chain 1, and tie off.

Row 11: Continuing Bag Construction

Return to the main color yarn for the bag. Attach the new yarn with a slip stitch on the chain 1 space and chain 1. Make 3 hdc in every chain 1 space around this row. From row 12 to 19, continue making 84 hdc in the round, making sure to mark the beginning stitch for each row.

8. Handle Construction

We're almost done with our bag! Now let's construct the handles.

Attaching Yarn and Making Handles

Attach the main color yarn for the bag handles with a slip stitch on one of the chain 1 spaces. Chain 1 and make 3 hdc in every chain 1 space. After two rows of 84 hdc, slip stitch to the beginning stitch, chain 1, and tie off.

Repetition of Handle Rows

To create a repeated handle pattern, mark the handle spaces on both sides of the bag evenly, leaving 23 stitches for each space. Attach the yarn, chain 1, and half double crochet to the first marker. Chain 23 and half double crochet to the other side. Continue half double crocheting to the next marker. Repeat the process of chaining 23 and half double crocheting in the round for another 4 rows. Finish with a slip stitch, chain 1, and tie off.

9. Finalizing the Bag

Before we can showcase our beautiful crochet bag, we need to finish a few details.

Sewing in Ends

Take the time to sew in all the yarn ends to give your bag a clean and polished appearance. This step ensures that your bag is sturdy and ready for use.

Adding a Button Closure

If you wish to have a closure for your bag, consider adding a button. Find a suitable spot on the inside of the bag where you can sew a button to keep the bag securely closed.
