Introduction
Welcome back to my channel! In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to make an easy swimsuit cover-up. As someone who is not an apparel sewist, I picked a knit fabric for this project because it doesn't fray, making it ideal for beginners. This cover-up is customizable, allowing you to add your own personal style to it. So let's dive into the tutorial and create a fashionable and practical swimwear accessory!
Moving to a New Studio
Before we jump into the tutorial, I wanted to give you a quick update on my recent move to a new studio. If you're interested in hearing all the details, make sure to check out my previous video where I share the lowdown on my new space. I'm almost done setting up, and once everything is in place, I'll be doing a studio tour. Now that I'm settled, I'm excited to film my first tutorial in this new studio. So let's get started with the swimsuit cover-up project!
Tutorial: Easy Swimsuit Cover-Up
Materials Needed
To make this easy swimsuit cover-up, you will need the following materials:
- Burnout knit fabric
- Trim of your choice
- Matching thread
Cutting and Folding the Fabric
Start by cutting your fabric to approximately 40 inches wide and 60 inches long. The great thing about using knits is that they usually come in 60-inch wide fabric, so you'll only need about a yard for this project. Once cut, fold the fabric in half to create a fold at the top. Knits are also forgiving, making them perfect for beginners.
Working on the Neckline
To determine the center point of your fabric, fold it in half and mark it with a pin or a water-soluble marker. From the folded edge, measure 10 inches on each side and mark it with pins. These pins will help you create a starting point for the neckline. For a simple and customizable look, we'll be going with a curved neckline. Use fabric scissors to cut along the marked line.
Trying on and Making Adjustments
Now it's time to try on the cover-up and make any necessary adjustments. Put the cover-up over your clothes to get a better idea of the length and how it fits. If desired, you can cut the length or adjust the neckline to suit your preferences. This project is all about personalization, so feel free to make it your own!
Sewing the Side Seams
Once you're happy with the fit, it's time to sew the side seams. With the cover-up turned inside out, pin the side seams in place. Start sewing approximately 15 inches from the bottom hem, and sew all the way up to the armhole. Repeat this step on the other side. To give the seams a finished look, sew in a bit and then sew down 5/8 of an inch.
Turning the Cover-Up Right Side Out
After sewing the side seams, turn the cover-up right side out. This will reveal the right side of the fabric. Now is the time to make any final adjustments to the neckline. If you want the front to be a little lower, make a mark and cut accordingly. Try on the cover-up again to ensure the adjustments suit your preferences.
Adding Trim and Embellishments
For an added touch, you can add trim or embellishments to the cover-up. Whether it's rickrack, pom-pom trim, or any other decorative element, use a sewing machine to stitch them in place. Knit fabrics are generally easy to work with, so attaching the trim securely should be a breeze. Fold the fabric edge over if desired for a finished look.
Conclusion
